Why I Drink RAW Milk…A Campaign for Real Milk.

Raw Milk. Aaaah! These words may evoke a sense of uneasiness for some, a memory of your mother telling you how dangerous it is or some health scare you heard on TV. Or, you may be on the other end of the spectrum and have discovered the nourishing qualities that make it a sacred food. Personally, I have come to believe very strongly in raw milk and I am hoping to pass on some simple, yet extremely valuable, knowledge to you.

“Raw” simply means that the milk is not pasteurized. Actually, it means a whole lot more than that, but I’ll get to that later. Pasteurization began in the 1920s to combat TB, undulant fever, infant diarrhea and other diseases caused by poor animal nutrition and unclean production methods. Understand that times have definitely changed. Not only does pasteurization kill deadly bacteria, if present, it also destroys valuable enzymes, denatures microbial and immune-stimulating components as well as fragile milk proteins, diminishes nutrient availability, destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6, kills beneficial bacteria and promotes pathogens. It is also associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth and behavior problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis and heart disease. Also, understand that this kind of pasteurization has to be done to confinement cattle given the following information {those are the ones you see in the cages on TV with a thousand sistas on each side of them!}.

An educational pamphlet from the Weston A. Price Foundation’s “Campaign for Real Milk” says, “The source of most commercial milk is modern {rather than the traditional} Holstein, bred to produce huge quantities of milk –three times as much as the old-fashioned cow- and to survive on a grain-based diet rather than on grass. She needs high-protein feed and antibiotics to keep her well. Her milk contains high levels of growth hormone from her pituitary gland, even when she is spared the indignities of genetically engineered Bovine Growth Hormone to push the udder limits of milk production.” Appropriate feed for cows is green grass in spring, summer and fall and stored dry hay, silage and root vegetables in winter. Commercial cows have a diet of soy meal, cotton seed meal or other commercial feeds, chicken manure, swill from ethanol production {aka corn byproducts} and citrus peel cake laced with pesticides. Understand that what we eat makes up who we are {yes, even moo-cows}…our muscles, fat, organs, milk production, etc. all the way down to the cellular level. Sick. No thanks confinement moo-ers.

Modern stainless steel tanks, milking machines, refrigerated trucks and improved testing methods no longer make drinking raw milk a game of Russian roulette. The cows graze on grass and the appropriate diet {and get lots of sunshine!} and produce milk that contains large amounts of vital nutrients such as vitamins A, D and K2, beneficial bacteria, enzymes, B vitamins and immune-stimulating components, to mention a few.

Raw milk also contains lactase, an enzyme that helps with the digestion of lactose, a milk sugar. Many Americans are lactose intolerant and are unable to comfortably tolerate pasteurized milk. Well, no wonder! Pasteurization kills lactase, making it very difficult on many people’s digestive systems. If you are lactose intolerant, try a small amount of raw milk and work up to your desired amount.

Not only does raw milk taste like liquid heaven, it is extremely good for you and your family’s health. What more could you ask for in a food…or, drink rather? Raw milk is especially good for women who are trying to get pregnant as it is full of vital nutrients needed to build the body up for achieving pregnancy and keeping mommy and baby strong and healthy.

I encourage you to find a source of clean, raw milk in your area and taste it for yourself. If you’re still not sold, check out these sites for more information…

Hey! Everything I’ve researched regarding pregnancy has said to not drink anything non-pasteurized, raises risk of miscarriage due from
Listeria…. Be careful! I actually am interested in raw milk but def not when pregnant :/

Hey Christy! I am SO excited you are interested in raw milk!!!!!! I definitely can understand your concern given the hype regarding raw milk all these years. I was very nervous about it when I started drinking it about 5 years ago, but once I researched it more I felt so much better about it. Raw milk is regulated very closely and is tested for harmful pathogens non-stop. I know many many many women who drink raw milk up to, throughout and after pregnancy with absolutely no problems. I would never say anything about it if I wasn’t confident in my research and experience.
The fact is that there is a lot of scare behind raw milk…the dairy council is a strong body and they loose money when we chose raw milk. And yes, raw milk as well as pasteurized can be dangerous if it is not appropriately handled, monitored and tested. Please read from some of the resources I posted to learn more about it.
I drink Organic Pastures raw milk which is vigorously tested on a regular basis so I always feel comfortable with it.
Christy, you are about to pop that little nugget out so try it out once baby comes, if you feel more comfortable. You can always try some of mine before you buy your own. It is truly delicious! Love you!
